Theodore Henry Hinchman was born in Morris County, New Jersey on March 6, 1818. He worked as a clerk in New York for five years before moving to Detroit in 1836 at the age of eighteen. There he went into the drug and grocery business, and married Louisa Chapin, the daughter of one of his employers, Dr. Marshal Chapin. In 1844 he became a partner in the firm.
